If we expect relevant results from other searches, why not expect the same from our library search?

Question: "When searching for our next online holiday destination, do we expect all the results to be listed A-Z according to the region's name?"

All library systems (including SmartSuite) have the ability to list search results in chronological order by Title, Call Number, Author, Accession Date, etc.

This form of ordering results is simple and should be done by all major library systems.

However, SmartSearch has been designed with your end-clients in mind. If they are used to searching a particular way, why attempt to introduce a stumbling block instead of developing towards their expectations?

Relevance results

Most libraries today will be populated with tens of thousands of invaluable resources and novels.

This means, one search could potentially return 100's if not 1,000's of results for one term.

Having these results returned A-Z could prove deadly for an excellent resource with a title starting with "M" (as it will be further down the list).

End-clients today have been conditioned to extract information from the top 5 results. Whilst teaching best practice research and validating articles is a must, a student searching for a fiction novel wants information now.

SmartSuite's market leading SmartSearch orders results on their relevance to the user's search, much like Google and other online search engines.

SmartSuite saves client's time, highlighting resources that wouldn't otherwise be utilised by other library system's search engines.

Evolving intelligence

The truth behind our search engine is an industry secret but what we can tell you is that SmartSearch is always evolving.

We understand that sociocultural factors affect how individuals interact with and expect systems to operate, so why develop a system today and expect end-clients to engage with it 5 years or even 12 months from now?

SmartSuite and FSI's Research & Development team are constantly monitoring and analysing the results, clicks, engagement and views of different searches from all types of customers.

This allows our team to find the perfect equilibrium between what clients expect of a library management system and what they expect of a state of the art, on demand platform.

Search prediction (suggestions)

All library systems feature predictive searching

Have you put yours to the test?

Many library management systems use predefined dictionaries, which suggest search terms as a user types. However, when searching, many of the predicted terms will return zero results, as they are from a static dictionary list.

SmartSuite utilises innovation, common sense and data within your collection to suggest words and searches to your clients that will always return results.

SmartSuite doesn't just stop there: as end-clients type, the suggestion list will categorise the suggestions into groups based on search types.
